The Breast Cancer Trust was established in 2000 by a group of breast cancer specialist doctors and nurses at Waikato Hospital who wanted to make clinical trials possible and accessible to those diagnosed with breast cancer. The Waikato District Health Board received, and still to this day receives minimal government funding for research. So the Trust became a platform for fundraising, receiving donations, and submitting grants to make research for better outcomes happen for our patients!

In 2017 we changed our branding for the better, adding the word ‘research’ into our name and introducing the colour yellow into our brand to distinguish ourselves from the Breast Cancer Foundation’s pink branding and to highlight our commitment to the Waikato.

In celebration of 21 years, we made the decision to change our name to the Breast Cancer Research Trust (BCRT), removing Waikato because the reality is that we conduct research that benefits people nationwide. We want to ensure that the name of the trust reflects the work that we do to improve lives for wāhine/women all over New Zealand
