Leave a Legacy of Cure

Your Will can be a powerful act of hope

By leaving a gift to the Breast Cancer Research Trust, you’ll help fund breast cancer research right here in Waikato and across Aotearoa. It’s a way to protect the future for daughters, mothers, sisters, and families you may never meet. A quiet, lasting gesture that says: I believe in a world without breast cancer.

What Is a Bequest?

A bequest is a gift left in your Will. It’s a way to support the causes closest to your heart, without affecting your finances today.

Whether it’s a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or a residual gift, your legacy will help fund clinical trials, improve treatments, and bring us closer to a cure.

Stories of Legacy

Jenni Scarlet has spent her life caring for others. As a nurse, a daughter, and a founding member of the Breast Cancer Research Trust, she’s seen firsthand the heartbreak breast cancer brings, and the hope that research can offer.

Her story begins in childhood. Jenni was just eight when her grandmother passed away following a radical mastectomy. “I don’t remember seeing her smile after the surgery,” she recalls. Years later, Jenni’s mother was also diagnosed. The loss left a deep mark: “My younger sisters struggled to come to terms with it. We all did.”

Through more than 40 years in nursing, Jenni has cared for countless women facing breast cancer. “I still see some of their faces,” she says quietly. “I wonder what their children are doing now.”

It was during her postgraduate studies that Jenni became inspired by the power of research. In 2000, she joined Professor Ian Campbell to establish the Waikato Breast Cancer Research Trust. Since then, she’s helped lead clinical trials that have improved treatments, reduced side effects, and extended lives.

Now, Jenni has chosen to leave a bequest in her Will. A final act of care for future generations. “I think it’s important to leave a legacy,” she says. “A bequest is a way to help life live on, and to support a community that matters to you.”

As the Trust’s secretary for over 20 years, Jenni knows how vital every contribution is. “It’s a challenge to keep the funding going. Even a small gift can make a big difference.”

Jenni’s legacy will help fund research that saves lives. Yours can too.

Every bequest tells a story of love, courage, and belief in a better tomorrow. We’re honoured to carry those stories forward.

Why Your Legacy Matters

Breast cancer touches thousands of New Zealanders every year. Behind every diagnosis is a family, a story, a future worth fighting for.

Your gift will help:

  • Fund clinical trials

  • Support researchers working on targeted treatments

  • Give hope to women, men, and families

We receive no government funding. Every dollar is driven by generosity, and every bequest helps shape the future of breast cancer research.

How to Leave a Gift in Your Will

Leaving a bequest is simple, and deeply meaningful.

1. Speak to your lawyer or trustee

Let them know you’d like to include the Breast Cancer Research Trust in your Will.

2. Use this suggested wording

“I give to the Breast Cancer Research Trust (Charity Registration Number CC30617) the sum of $___ (or ___% of my estate) for its general purposes.”

3. Let us know (if you wish)

We’d love to thank you and keep you informed, confidentially and respectfully.

If you’re considering a gift in your Will, thank you. Your kindness will echo through generations, and help bring us closer to a cure.
